Figure Collaging

There is an abundance of inspiration in the local Charlotte art community, and opportunities to exercise your creativity together! I have been enjoying figure drawing sessions at Gaston County Museum of Art and History (FREE 3 Wednesdays a month!) as well as McColl and Free Range Brewing. But instead of figure DRAWING, I have been figure COLLAGING.

These sessions have given me the ability and motivation to use some hoarded supplies, like junk mail and paper bags, but even more so hoarded papers from my classroom! I especially love index cards my students have written on for this activity.

What’s more: I’ve finally put some sketchbooks I’ve been hanging onto to use, including my green Ugly Books sketchbook and a blank book I bound as a school project in the 4th grade!

Between 2-minute, 5-minute, 10-minute, and 20-minute poses, it didn’t take long to fill those up! So I ended up making my own extra long “junk journal” out of grocery bags to keep up!

I’m so pleased with several of these pieces that I’ve begun trying to recreate them on a larger scale with other papers, including old prints of mine and from friends (shout out, Stephanie!)

I am hoping to create a series combining multiple poses in each piece, but I am enjoying the practice in the meantime!
